I’m off out shortly to clean a friend’s car. I’ve been doing her cars for the last ten or so years, every two to three months, but the current car hasn’t been done since November 2019. What with weather and then this pandemic.
It’s only when you get everything out that you see how much you’ve got.
C ar loaded up, a bit tight.
But I can still close the boot cover.
Lowering the rear seats you can see it’s packed.
But again, no extra space needed.

Good luck doing the same in a crossover/SUV from the same company that also costs the same.
The 7-seat Skoda Kodiaq costs the same, yet is significantly shorter with a shorter wheelbase. Even with the additional
height taken into account (and the 3rd row removed) it has marginally
less space
in the boot. When you only look at the space below the the baggage cover, it is no contest.
Additionally, the crossover is heavier/slower/thirstier/dirtier when useing the same drive train and probably worse to drive as a result
. Due to the shorter wheelbase it will have less space in the second row.
I , with my not-worn hips and knees, still don’t understand crossovers. It’s less car for more money.

Our dealership told me the Kodiaq was the SUV version of the Superb. Total BS.
As you say, the boot is much smaller, maybe a third or so.
The rear seat leg room, also as you say, much less, again, probably by a third or so.
I had been looking at the Kodiaq and from time to time I see one on the road and think maybe I will get one. But then the Superb gets a tweak here or there and I know the next will be a Superb, the fourth.

The one place it makes sense: Strapping a kid into a car seat.
The extra height and taller cabin means you don’t have to bend over at an odd angle to heave the kid in the seat and buckle them in. Instead, it’s all arm strength at standing height.
Plus, modern sedans downright suck for getting a kid into a rear facing seat. The “fastback” style rooflines make for a pinched rear door opening.

That’s seriously impressive that all that fit without even having to fold the seats down!

Fair enough. Although the fastback style roof is not an issue with a wagon, like Svend’s Skoda.

True, wagons don’t have the “fastback roofline” problem, but the low roof and shorter cabin still are a pain.
I didn’t realize how bad it was until we replaced our Volvo V50 with a Ford Edge.
Though we eventually replaced that Edge with an Outback, and that’s the sweet spot between wagon and SUV for me. (Well, for family use.)

Well, to be fair, the V50 was a mk2 Ford Focus. The Edge is a much larger car, so more space is to be expected .
In the Skoda example from Svend the cabin of his Superb wagon is actually longer than that of the equivalently priced Skoda crossover/SUV. It has a longer wheelbase, more rear leg room and I presume longer doors.

The Edge is a much larger car. But it was the seat height and vertical cabin space that made the largest difference. A wide open space to put the kid in, and no bending over while holding a wiggly 20 pound weight.

A longer cabin could let you push your seat back further, even when a reverse facing car seat is behind you. But o therwise, the extra length isn’t that much of a help.
Trust me, your back will thank you for having a taller car when you have a kid.
